Frist of all you should have partitions on your HDD 
If you do not have partitions you have got one big problem..well if you have
then
you need not install Linux on the C Drive it is not  necessary if your machine
is up and running M$Windoz you can transfer data to tthe c :drive frist then
split  the d: drive  and then install Linux it is advisable to have more than
one partition in Linux for a full install Linux requires about 700 mb odd +
swap space about as much ram that you have and it would be also wise to have
two swap partitions 
the rest should be easy
