Hello,
As part of the LDD event all over, ILUG Cochin too held a meeting cum
demo day to mark the occasion. There was not much fanfare coz the venue
could not be confirmed till the last moment, resulting in a low turnout
of 16 heads, out of which 8 were newbies! This figure, though
disappointing, helped us to address the newbies in a better way.
It was decided to use RHL 6.0 for the demo purposes for the following
reasons...
- Ease of installation.
- Windows users would have little trouble using it.
- Support from computer mags like PCQ & Chip.
Highlights of the meeting
-------------------------
Date: Sunday, 19th Sept.
Time: 2 pm. - 6 pm.
Agenda: RedHat Linux 6.0 installation as part of LDD.
Configuring Sis 6215 display card.
Turnout: 16 heads
Refreshment Sponsor: Jaco Ooken
---------------MinuteS-----------------
We began the meeting with a formal intro by all present. A brief
description of popular distributions was given by Vimal, highlighting
the pros and cons for each. This was cut short as it looked like we were
about to have a distro war. Dont we always ;-)
Jaco, a newbie, expressed his doubts on the feasibility of the open
source model of development claiming that it will be shortlived. A war
of words broke lose almost immediately! It was decided to debate the
issue on a different date.
I then proceeded on to explain more about the hardware that was to be
used for the install...
- Cyrix 300Mhz
- 16 MB Ram
- 4.3 gb Seagate with Win95 pre loaded
- Sis 6215 with 2 MB VRAM
- Opti Sound card
- NE2000 compatible NIC
- 14" SVGA Monitor
The demo was done by Vimal. Ragu, Anoop and myself provided the backing
vocals. We used the RHL 6.0 Chip CD as almost everyone seemed to have a
copy. For some odd reason, the Chip CD we used refused to auto boot, it
worked fine during the trial run on the previous day. Fortunately, we
did have another copy in hand.
Each step was performed twice and explained in detail. The NIC, sound
card and Sis VGA card were all configured without a hitch. Though there
was an IRQ conflict between the sound card and the network card, we
managed to manually configure the sound card by running sndconfig with
the '--noprobe' option. Once X was up and running, we did a tour of KDE,
GNOME and Window Maker.
Since the installation process was very detailed, the demo lasted for
nearly two and a half hours. The meeting came to a close by 6pm.
The LUG would like to thank Jaco for the refreshments, Jay for letting
us use his premises as well as his PC and Vimal for carrying out the
demo.
Regards,
Shanker Balan
