Hi there,
you can also try doing "ntsysv" at the shell the shell prompt. this will
bring up a graphical tool for selecting or deselecting servies/daemon which
will be started at boot time. You can also use this tool for speeding up
your linux box. You guessed it right - by shutting down services which are
not required or the one that you don't use frequently.But you will have to
be careful and it is better if just lookup the breif functionality of each
service before you disable it. Typically you can shut off -
netstat,systat,tftp,bootp & finger. for your home PC if you are not sharing
the hard drive or using it as a web server then you can additionally shut
off samba (or smb) & httpd as well. If required you can always start these
services manually or enable them again in the bot process.

If you are on a red-hat, just use "setup" command to set up one of the
standard daemons.
If you want some special daemon, you'll have to modify the scripts in
/etc/rc.d, I think, an entry in rc.local will solve your problem.
