You can read mail in gnus - read about the nnmbox backend in the docs.

As usual, you need to put a bunch of stuff in your .emacs. Refer to the
gnus manual.

There is a package called "bbdb", which lets you do that. It integrates
well with vm and gnus.

BTW, (setq auto-fill-mode t). It makes your mails very readable.
