Here is the answer to my own question.
Hmm - linzip is crap . don't bother to use it kfm has a n archiver
that's ok. gmc is the best. it opens zip and tar files automatically in
the view itself ( a bit like zipmagic ) 
Disk spanning can be done with tar but the only problem is that tar
writes to the disks in raw format, so you cannot access or view the
files on the disks or even mount the disks until you untar them.So if
you have a file that just isn't fitting on a floppy you have to devote
two full floppies to it. and the rest of the space on the second floppy
is wasted.  But it seems to be the best way to go about it.
