well we had once such a problem, which turned out to be a problem of the
hosts
file in the server. also if in the dialin server of linux pppd is invoked by
mgetty,
then wvdial has to be forced to use pap, which is not the default, hence try
using
netconfig to configure and then use ifup ppp[x] to connect to the server.
