As root, run 'sndconfig' and configure the sound device first.

The sound device has to be configured before u can use the mixer.

U can listen to music directly, i.e. raw audio file *.au, by doing cat
foo.au > /dev/audio

An MP3 (mpg123,xmms) player should handle MP3 files. Yes! They are OS
dependent.
