The framebuffer howto is the ultimate source. Use it!

use fbset! Khadar: Did u check up whether u can dynamically set the
depth/refresh/resolution with fbset and run X?

I am running my matroxfb in 800x600x8bpp@85Hz. Cool huh? X is also at
800x600x32bpp@85Hz using XF86_SVGA.

When i shift from console to X, there is no mode change! Normally, the
screen will blink when u switch b/w X and the console, since i am using
the same modelines for console and X, that does not arise!

Refer fbset manpages and fb.modes!
