Unleashed : Red Hat Linux, a good book indeed.

This being a complete operating system, needs to have separate space of
it's own as it will be sitting between your machine's hardware and you.
It can not run parallel to your windows98 [Not at the same time, unless
you are using a virtual machine like VMWARE, which I think is not
appreciable to you now]. At a time you will be able to run either
windows or Linux.
Believe me, it is worth a try. Many, like me, have taken it up as hobby,
and really with to see the day when there will be real large number of
careers in Linux as well as industrial focus will be on it too.

You have windows already? Cool, you are just about to go and have some
fun with an o/s which will offer you stability and security and true
multiuser, multitasking environment.
You will need to free space on your machine for Linux to take it up
later.
How big is your HDD?
You will need to create a new partition with smaller size [You C:, if is
taking up all the space on the HDD then you will need to get a more
familiar-with-partitioning friend of yours to resize your C drive
without losing data, using FIPS or Partitionmagic <these are tools for
repartitioning without losing data>] Or if you have not yet assigned all
the space to your windows, we can move from here.
Linux will take up all the free [unallocated to any drive] space on your
HDD. The untouched space. I will suggest that you get some knowlegeable
friend of yours, one Red Hat Linux 6.1's installation CD [Which came
with PC Quest November issue last year] and boot your machine with this
CD in CD Rom drive. Boot from the CD. Type text on the prompt and have
the fun.
This will not destroy anything on your existing windows partition. Read
the /doc on the CD very carefully before starting. Have everything clear
before you start. Someone installed windows for you, which is not an
easy process. So do not be disappointed if you face failure there in
installing Linux. Come to us. To our best, we will help.
TIP - Always try a 'workstation class' or 'custom' installation if you
already have windows on your machine. This will make sure that you do
not lose all the data under the other o/s.
All the best. Welcome to the right place.
