I have a problem with starting KDE as root.

#1: startkde reports some errors like Unable to
connect to X-Server
#2: but Writing KDE into /etc/sysconfig/desktop
starts KDe when I type startx at the prompt. To
automate this I Wrote a Shell Script (and placed
it in /etc/profile.d) to Ask the user whether he
wants to use GNOME or KDE.

This script writes into the
/etc/sysconfig/desktop file starts seither KDE or
GNOME based on what the user selects. It all
works well as long as the user is not root. But
for root irrespective of what I select only GNOME
starts. Is it that root can start only GNOME or
is there any other fix for this?
