Even if they do not provide the drivers, they could at least open up the
programming specs for the card ASAP.

Money u spent spent on ur current configuration (all approx)-
PIII 450 - Rs. 12,000
Slot I M/B - Rs. 4,000
S3 AGP/8MB - Rs. 1800
---------
Total - Rs. 17,800 (1)
If I had Rs. 17,800, i would get -
AMD K6-2/450 - Rs. 3,200
ASUS P5-AB MB - Rs. 4,800
Voodoo Banshee 16 MB - Rs. 4,500
---------
Total - Rs. 12,500 (2)
(1) - (2) = Rs. 5,300 *still* in my pocket!
Now what could i do with this saving? I could...
1) Replace Banshee with TNT2/G200/TNT2
2) Get a K6-3 if available
3) Get more RAM
4) Get copy of Q3 Arena for Rs 2000 (heard it is sold out in Bombay)
5) Contribute to the Orissa Relief fund
6) Donate it to the Debian community
7) Treat myself to Scotch ;-)
Advantages:
1) I get the best price/performace ratio.
2) I get to play Glquake w/o hassles.
3) I get Graphic Frambe Buffer with acceleration.
4) I get to use DRI on X.
5) AMD's sales turnover rises, their earnings per share (EPS) increases
and
market share also widens. Overall effect? AMD invests more in R&D to
develop
Athlon. ;-)
6) Intel's turnover falls, market share falls and thus EPS falls.
Intel's share
holders panic and invest in AMD. Genuine Intel dealers soon become
"Genuine AMD
dealers". ;-)
7) ASUS suddenly realizes that there is money to be made from Athlon and
releases Slot-A mother boards running at 200 MHz. This board is soon
crowned, PC
Quest/Chip India Editor's choice.
8) 3Dfx/Riva/Matrox now realize the sweet benefits of open sourcing
their
technologies. They are now even more enthusiastic about official support
on
Linux.
9) SGI is proud that it is their graphic API that has made it all
possible. They
now want to make Irix open source as a follow up. <Aaaah, do i see Raj
grinning>
10) OpenGL becomes more popular than DirectX.
11) Quake3 sales goes triple platinum and at least half of these sold
were for
the Linux platform. John Carmack is now thinking of open sourcing the Q3
engine.
12) In view of the success of Q3 on Linux, other major studios like
Electronic
Arts are now thinking of Linux as a viable platform. Need for Speed
series gets
ported to Linux, GL version of course. ;-)
13) We probable might hear the last of SiS,Trident and Cirrus Logic
Disadvantages? Can't think of any
Any comments?
