Just to make sure that if someone is interested in the solution for that
problem, this is what Peter Wyss wrote to me, and it works fine:

Don't use irattach, just point kpilotDeamon to /dev/ircomm and start
irmanager with the parameter -d 1.
Works fine for me (Kernel 2.2.9-irda2 and toshoboe on Toshiba Portege
7020).
