The only confirmed working phone is AFAIK the Ericsson SH888 but you SHOULD be
able to use the Nokia 8810 and possibly also the new Ericsson T18 and T29.

Yes. You'll use PPP on top of the IrCOMM protocol.

Correct! The Nokia 8810 and Ericsson SH888 have this. The other phones
available today don't. (Regarding the T18 and T29 I'm not quite sure what's
true, someone else is more than welcome to fill out the gaps.)
