I agree that the documentation is in a poor state, but you
fall in the same trap as everybody else. The question is :
"To which kernel version does it apply ?"
The Linux-IrDA Howto is pretty bad on this precise point, and
mix up pre 2.2.15 and post 2.2.15 instructions without making a clear
distinction.
From your experience, you have a pre 2.2.15 kernel (I suspect
2.2.14). Unfortunately, if you apply the exact same instructions to
2.2.15 or 2.4.0, it won't work at all. For 2.4.0, see on my web
page...
