After a lot of trial and error, I have managed to set up ir - communication between my Siemens S25 and Compaq Armada 1530. I am running Suse 7.0 with kernel 2.4.0. Question 1.) I have a dual - boot system on my laptop. Nt and Linux. When running NT, I am using 3.rd party software from "extended systems" in order to make the ir-port work. NT uses com 2 for IR. When I am using Linux I have to type the following command : linux:~ # irattach /dev/ttyS2 -s 1 1.1 Tue Nov 9 15:30:55 1999 Dag Brattli If I am not mistaken, ttyS2 is the same as com3. Why is Linux and NT using different ports? ( If I type something different, for example : linux:~ # irattach /dev/ttyS1 -s 1 ( Com 2 ) linux:~ # irattach /dev/ttyS3 -s 1 ( Com 4 ) then the Ir - communication won't work at all........ Question 2.) Each time I reboot the laptop, I have to type linux:~ # irattach /dev/ttyS2 -s 1 in order to activate the port. Can this be done automatically at boot time ?? How ??? Question 3.) I run KDE. As I am used to NT, I like graphical user interfaces.... How can I set up a button that, when pressed, tries to dial-up my ISP using my Siemens phone ? Now, I have to do everything in text-modus : linux:~ # wvdial --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.41 --> Initializing modem. --> Sending: ATZ ATZ OK --> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 OK --> Modem initialized. --> Idle Seconds = 180, disabling automatic reconnect. --> Sending: ATDT91500920 --> Waiting for carrier. ATDT91500920 CONNECT 9600/RLP --> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately. --> Starting pppd at Sat Feb 24 19:31:17 2001 --> pid of pppd: 971 --> pppd: local IP address 212.17.128.30 --> pppd: remote IP address 212.17.128.1 --> pppd: primary DNS address 212.17.131.3 --> pppd: secondary DNS address 194.213.64.33 --> pppd: Script /etc/ppp/ip-up run successful --> Default route Ok. --> Nameserver (DNS) Ok. --> Connected... Press Ctrl-C to disconnect Caught signal #2! Attempting to exit gracefully... --> pppd: Terminating on signal 15. --> pppd: Script /etc/ppp/ip-down started --> pppd: Terminate Request (Message: "User request") --> pppd: Connect time 4.6 minutes. --> Disconnecting at Sat Feb 24 19:35:51 2001 linux:~ # I tried using the "kppp". I can't make "kppp" work. When I press the button, the phone actually calls up my ISP. ( I can see this in the phones display ). In the log window, I get this : ATHATZ OK ATM0L0 OK ATDT91500920 CONNECT 9600/RLP The only problem is that Netscape "can't find the connection" when I dial this way. ( Unable to locate server etc. etc. ) Netscape can make the connection when using "WvDial" ( In text modus...... ) Question 4.) I have to login as root now, in order to set up the connection. How can I enable all users to dial-up to my ISP using IrDA ( and my Siemens S25 ) Question 5.) I am using an Norwegian ISP "Tele2". The cellular "service-provider" is "Telenor" . Is the speed using cellular phone still 9600 ? Is it possible to use higher speed? I have read something about Telenor allowing higher speed using ordinary GSM phone. Question 6.) ( LAST QUESTION ) I was advised to use kernel 2.4.0 in order to make IrDA work. In kernel 2.4.0, IrDA works. The sound-chip in the laptop stopped working when I went from 2.2.x to 2.4.0. In 2.2.x I had the possibility to set DMA, irq, etc etc for the sound. I can't find these settings in the "make menuconfig" for the 2.4.0 What to do?
