Well I got my Inspiron 7500, in June 2000, and I think it has the same IrDA 
controller.. I got mine to work with SIR so far..
In my bios settings I use FIR speed...
and I load my IrPort at ttyS0.. I really don't know why.. but all the others failed...
This works, great with 2.2.18, and irda-utils 0.9.13

I've managed to sync my PalmV and use my Siemens S25 without any problems.. 
I don't have the laptop at hand when writing this, but if it is to any help, I could 
check the SMC version, somehow.. just not sure how to do that...
