Perhaps I can help here. I happen to have SMC hardware in my laptop
(Inspiron 4000). And I'd like to see it working in FIR mode properly.

Unfortunately, programming *inside* the kernel is not my strong point, I
hope I can help with trying out patches. (as long as I know which kernel
version to apply them to).

Let me know if you think that would be useful.
