Hi, I've got a Nokia 6210 phone and a laptop and would like to use these together under Linux. Under Windows 98 I can use the Nokia as a fax-modem to connect to the Net, receive incoming data connections and send/receive faxes. I can also edit my phone's logos and back-up the internal phone book using LogoManager. This is now the only reason I have a Windows partition at all!
My Linux is kernel 2.4.5 out of the box on Slackware 8.0. At the moment my infra-red port is not running under Linux because I've been unable to get it going. I've studied endless documents and the problem I have is that there is so much information out there, much of it conflicting and a lot of it obsoleted by later information. Another part of the problem is that I don't really understand how an infra-red port manifests under Linux. For example, does it appear as a network interface (as some of the utilities suggest) or another device? Do I need to create some files first with mknod? Can kernel 2.4.5 run my infra-red port or is a later kernel required? My goal is to a) understand, once and for all, the procedure I need to follow in order to set everything up, from devices to drivers, b) understand how I interact with my infra-red port, and subsequently my phone and c) avoid compiling my kernel and stick to using modules if at all possible. So far I've tried all kinds of stuff, have had no luck and have just seen endless amounts of conflicting data. For example, one website might say you need irattach, another says it's not needed. One howto talks about toshoboe, another says toshoboe's obsolete. I've also taken this list for a few weeks and lurked but haven't been able to put any of the info within to practical use for my own situation. Is there a very clear and definitive guide which once and for all explains what the hell I do and don't need to do in order to get infra-red running, and how I interact with it? As an aside, has anyone else had success with a Nokia 6210 and perhaps been able to back-up the phone book (my main goal) and use the modem features with success? For reference, Slackware 8.0, kernel 2.4.5, Fujitsu Lifebook 765Tx, infra-red port enabled in BIOS (can't remember if there are any IR-specific options). Any assistance, clues or pointers in the right direction much appreciated. Thanks. -- Regards, Chris _______________________________________________ Linux-IrDA mailing list - [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pasta.cs.UiT.No/mailman/listinfo/linux-irda
