I agree, this could be a solution, but actually I don't have time
to do this. So at least I try to follow the 'bleeding edge'.
And should make this more clear in the HOWTO I guess.
Another reason to do so is my intention to write
the HOWTO not for the experts but for people which
are looking for an easy way to setup a Linux-IrDA connection.

Though it's quite difficult to follow all the moves of the
Linux-IrDA project (at least for me), I'm unsure what to do.
The Linux-IrDA developement seems to encounter sometimes unforseen
troubles with the IrDA standard. And it seems
a quite big task itself.
To gain more time for this, Dag has
announced to put most of the efforts of the Linux-IrDA
developers into 2.3/2.4 .
Probably we have to live with a more or less incomplete support
for 2.2.x, but anyway I would appreciate a schedule of
the next developement steps. And some priorities, for instance
first the CLI interfaces, next the GUIs.
If the CLIs are stable, I expect it to be more easy for
non IrDA experts to step in and help with the GUIs.
But I don't want to bother
the developers by this statement, I know all of you are
working hard for this project.
Cheers
