I made a device irdevice with major/minor 161, 0.
aliases in /etc/conf.modules:
alias tty-ldisc-11 irtty
alias char-major-60 ircomm-tty
alias irda-dongle-4 girbil

modprobe ircomm-tty
modprobe irtty
modprobe girbil
modprobe ppp
dongle_attach irda0 -d girbil
irmanager -d 1
pppd /dev/irdevice 115200 10.0.0.1:10.0.0.2 passive silent persist noauth
local nodetach
