8,6 Kbytes/s * 1024 * 10 = 88064 bps. Did you expect so much more? When you
run IrLAN you have 40 bytes of TCP/IP headers + 14 bytes Ethernet header +
5 bytes of IrDA header + wrapping and stuffing for _each_ frame you
send. In addition I should mention that IrDA is half duplex ;-)

BTW: I suspect that you don't mean 8.6 kilo bits/s?

At 4 Mbps (FIR) I have measured FTP speeds of up to 375 Kbytes/s which is
much more fun anyway ;-)
