further report from last night's brief tinkering. findchop said that
i have a NSC PC87338. if i try to load that module:

[root@danube ian]# /sbin/modprobe nsc-ircc
/lib/modules/2.2.15pre3/misc/nsc-ircc.o: init_module: Device or resource busy

and in dmesg:

IrDA (tm) Protocols for Linux-2.2 (Dag Brattli)
nsc-ircc, Wrong chip version 16

last night the message in dmesg gave the version as 0c, so i'm not
sure where this number is coming from. since findchop can identify
the chip, maybe this isn't necessary anyway.

but, i found that if i just loaded the irda, irtty, and ircomm-tty,
and then started irmanager, i could make my HP 4050's IR dongle blink,
meaning that it seemed to find the laptop. but if i tried to 'cat
/etc/passwd >/dev/ttyS1' i just got an i/o error. any hints here?

btw, someone asked where i got the findchip program (haven't actually
got any mailing list responses, but i read in the online archive). i
found it in the snapshots directory at
http://www.cs.uit.no/linux-irda/snapshots/
