You must use modprobe!

Lots of changes to the NSC driver lately. You should use pre-patch-2.2.15-4
or 5 (which should be out in a few days). The driver is now called nsc-ircc
since it supports the other NSC chipsets as well.

You should also read irda-utils/irattach/README for more info.
