Hi. I'm very new to IR but not new to Linux. I'm trying to make my IBM
Thinkpad 770 talk to my shiny new Palm V. I have never attempted to use my
laptop's IR port before. I've turned the IR port on in windows, compiled
kernel-2.2.15pre7 (fully modularized ir stuff) and irda-utils-0.9.10,
added the following to my /etc/conf.modules:

alias tty-ldisc-11 irtty
alias char-major-161 ircomm-tty
alias irda-dongle-0 tekram
alias irda-dongle-1 esi
alias irda-dongle-2 actisys
alias irda-dongle-3 actisys
alias irda-dongle-4 girbil
alias irda-dongle-5 litelink
alias irda-dongle-6 airport
alias irda-dongle-7 old_belkin
options nsc-ircc dongle_id=0x09
alias irda0 nsc-ircc

and try to run the irattach command for the Thinkpad 770 described in
irda-utils-0.9.10/irattach/README:

irattach irda0 -s 1

The module nsc-ircc fails to load, however. In /var/log/messages, I see
the following:

Feb 14 01:08:55 localhost irattach: executing: '/sbin/modprobe irda0'
Feb 14 01:08:55 localhost kernel: IrDA (tm) Protocols for Linux-2.2 (Dag
Brattli)

Feb 14 01:08:55 localhost irattach: executing: 'echo 1 >
/proc/sys/net/irda/discovery'
Feb 14 01:08:55 localhost irattach: Setting discovery to 1 exited with
status 1
Feb 14 01:08:55 localhost irattach: Starting device irda0
Feb 14 01:08:55 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
net-pf-23

Hmm. The wrong chip version 16 seems to be the trouble. Hmm. findchip
says:

NSC,PC87338,11.3,0x2e,0x3f8,0x3f8,4,3,1,0,1

Hmm. That's as far as I've gotten. Can anyone suggest where I may be going
wrong? Is there more comprehensive user documentation available? What's
the different between FIR and SIR? What user utilities are recommended for
managing the laptop<-> palm connection? I've seen references for
everything from sync-plan to PalmManager to pilot-xfer to ir-obex.
