I have just tried irattach with the -s 1 option but still no luck....
its interesting to note that when I run ifconfig.... I can see the Tx
and Rx counts for irda0 update but there is no change form 0 for the
irlan0 interface.

I have been running irdadump..... the bit below is an extract from my
irdadump session on my desktop machine when I move the laptop out of the
room and back in!

I may end up going for IrNET.... I would also then be able to use my
friends Win2k (spits on floor!) laptop! Which kernel do you
reccomend.... 2.4.x or 2.3.x?

Are there any man pages for irdadump or any telling what its doing
without reading the source?
