Are the test6 patches required for irda to work at all in test8?

I have a sony vaio laptop and a ESI neteye irda dongle on my pc. I built
2.4.0test8 on both machines, and insmodded various modules... ifconfiged
"irda" up on my pc, ifconfig irda0 up on the laptop, gave them ips....

I can ping the pc from the laptop, but not vice versa, and the pings do
not return.
PC
irda Link encap:IrLAP HWaddr 4f:cb:9f:71
          inet addr:192.168.0.4 Mask:255.255.255.0
          UP RUNNING NOARP MTU:2048 Metric:1
          RX packets:542 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:8
laptop
irda0 Link encap:IrLAP HWaddr c3:21:ef:56
          inet addr:192.168.0.3 Mask:255.255.255.0
          UP RUNNING NOARP MTU:2048 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:568 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:8

Both machines seem to be running at 9600 baud... is there a reason for
this? (I configured the Ultra protocol in...)

[root@enki irda]# cat irlap
irlap0 state: LAP_NDM
  caddr: 0xae, saddr: 0x4fcb9f71, daddr: 0x000000
win size: 0, win: 0, line capacity: 0, bytes left: 0
tx queue len: 0 win queue len: 0 rbusy: FALSE mbusy: FALSE
  retrans: 0 vs: 0 vr: 0 va: 0
qos bps maxtt dsize winsize addbofs mintt ldisc comp
  tx 9600 0 64 1 11 0 0
  rx 9600 0 64 1 11 0 0

Thanks for any help you can offer....
