Well, be careful with this Adapter as described there:
It is only suitable for work with an internal IrDA Connector on your
Motherboard, and _not_ for connecting to a standard serial Port.
The reason is, that the little flashes the transmitter-led has to do
need to be done according to the IrDA specs. That means proper timing and
maximum length of these pulses.
The same is true for the Receiving side: Those short pulses of a 9600Bd
are unlikely to be discoverd correctly by a standard serial Port.
There are some Chips on the market, that care for the proper timing, and
make sure the led takes no damage.
The Temic Telefunken: TOIM 3232 is one of several of such chips that do
this task.
When you chande the setting in your BIOS to IrDA then exactly such a
device (integrated in your Super-IO chip) is activated to have the proper
signals on the (internlal) IrDA header.
The circuit from the URL below is suited for these prconditioned signals,
but NOT for a standrad serial port...
The used Connector is now standardized by IrDA and supports the old SIR
modules as well as newer FIR interfaces.
It is also fitted for future (differential, intelligent?) serial Modules.
