Hi all,

Thx for reading this message as I seriously need some help with my IR
device(IR Wave Device) with my SH888 GSM phone.

Currently I just installed Linux Mandrake 7.2 and it has kernel
2.2.17-21mdk. Then I downloaded irda-utils 0.9.13 and install it accordingly
to some DOC files that I read. From the "IR-How To", I am suppose to edit
the irda config. file in "/etc/conf.modules". But I could not find the file
in the "etc" folder but found this "/etc/modules.conf" instead. So I suppose
it is the same file and add this 2 lines to it :

#IrDA
alias tty-ldisc-11 irtty
alias char-major-161 ircomm-tty

Then I did a "depmod -a" to update which the DOC files say this should help
me autoload the irComm when I need it.

I also edit "/etc/sysconfig/irda" with:

IRDA=yes
DEVICE=/dev/ttyS0 #As my IRWave device is attached to serial port 1
#DONGLE=actisys+ #Do not know what this is. So just left it alone.
DISCOVERY=yes

Then I make modules for ircomm0, ircomm1 and irnine.
I did:
# ll /dev/ir*

Results:

crw-r--r-- 1 root root 161, 0 Dec 14 15:58 /dev/ircomm0
crw-r--r-- 1 root root 161, 1 Dec 11 17:10 /dev/ircomm1
crw-r--r-- 1 root root 161, 0 Dec 14 15:55 /dev/irnine

Then I reboot my PC.

At restart:
I type "modprobe irda"

# "lsmod" gives:

irda 80304 0 (unused)

supermount 14224 2 (autoclean)

Then I enable my SH888 infrared and type:
# irattach /dev/ttyS0 -s 1

Result: I look at my infrared-device(IRWave), 2 LEDs light up and blinks
must be the carrier and connection light i guess...

Then I do:
# ifconfig

Results:
irda0 Link encap:IrLAP HWaddr 6e:ea:44:ca
          UP RUNNING NOARP MTU:2048 Metric:1
          RX packets:187 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

lo Link encap:Local Loopback

          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

Then I do:
# cat /proc/net/irda/discovery

result:
IrLMP: Discovery log:

nickname: SH 888, hint: 0x9104, saddr: 0x6eea44ca, daddr: 0x3fb2a864

I guess this shows my IR device has detected my SH888 phone.

Then I tried communicating with the phone using
#minicom
I set baud rate at 9600bps
I also setup serial port to : /dev/ircomm0
Then I tried initialising the modem again
Result:
My SH888 shows only 1 LED blinking very fast and not so bright too.
Think they is no carrier light blinking.Or no connection to the phone.
I am not sure what to do now. Thus I just exit minicom and after a few
seconds my IR device (both the 2 LEDs starts to blink normally again).

These are the other anaysis that I have made. I hope this will give
you pple out there more helpful hints as in which steps I have missed out.

I did:
# irdaping 0x3fb2a864

Results:
IrDA ping (0x3fb2a864): 32 bytes
32 bytes from 0x3fb2a864: irda_seq=0 time=152.01 ms.
32 bytes from 0x3fb2a864: irda_seq=1 time=110.03 ms.
32 bytes from 0x3fb2a864: irda_seq=2 time=110.03 ms.
32 bytes from 0x3fb2a864: irda_seq=3 time=151.93 ms.

32 bytes from 0x3fb2a864: irda_seq=7 time=110.04 ms.

So I guess connection is OK.

Type "ctrl z" to stop the program ping.

Then I do this again:
# lsmod

Results:
