>From memory - installation to a SuSE 5.3 with a 2.0.36 kernel:

1. download the latest & greatest isdn4linux package (about 3Mb) from
either ftp://ftp.suse.com or ftp://ftp.franken.de. Remember you want
the package that goes with your kernel (2.0, 2.1 or 2.2). There are
differences in the functionality, so you might consider upgrading
your kernel - my gateway is currently 2.0.36, and I'm considering
   upgrading to 2.2.9 (SuSE 6.1).

2. untar "tar xzf isdn4linux..." the package into
/usr/src/packages/isdn4linux

3. follow the instructions in the readme.

   make config
   make
   make install

For starting isdnlog it seems the SuSE setup's got something wrong. isdnlog
will always exit immediately. If you start it manually there is no problem.

So far I have only used isdnctrl, isdnlog, and imon - I can make a
connection
to my provider (isdnctrl dial <dev>), but I haven't quite made diald work
yet.

Nope, not yet (assuming you meant diald). I got quite close last night, but
I
wasn't really satisfied with the way I'd done it.
My only reason for using diald is that I have e.g. xntp running - otherwise
I'd just be configuring the isdn device with -arp and -broadcast, and that's
all I'd need. I am considering shutting down xntp.
