I don't know if it helps or not, but I have been using an external
Adtran Express 3000 since RedHat 6.0 (with 6.1 and now 6.2). It was a
real pain to set up the first time, but has been rock solid reliable
since the first time I got it to connect <G>. There are a few things I
learned along the way.

If you are just hooking to the PC's standard COM port, it will work
fine, except that you will get very crippled throughput (something like
a max of 96 kbs). I ended up getting a high performance com port card
from http://www.turbocom.com/ and it really works well now. A little
tricky to figure out the initial setup, but very simple. Let me know if
you decide to go this route and I will give you the setserial
parameters.

I just use KPPP for my dialing because I was too lazy to figure out
pppd. KPPP is just a fancy front end for pppd, so you could use
anything. If you can talk to the modem through minicom, you should be
able to dial it. I don't know anything about how you need to dial, but
if you can get a ppp session initiated by issuing AT commands from
within minicom, you are all set.

Good luck.
