Just a heads up for now.
You input are greatly appreciated and I would love to avoid the recursive
build we have today.
I will try to analyze your proposal in more depths a bit later and return
to you.

On of the things to investigate is how to solve the uses of:
CFLAGS_<filename>.o

I have in mind several simpler solutions - one is obviously to
use:
CFLGAS_$(src)/<filename>.o
