There are a zillion reasons why this technique is superior
to using `#ifdef CONFIG_FOO'. But, alas, gcc fumbles
the ball:

> cat t.c
foo()
{
        if (0)
                bar("hhhhhhh");
}
> gcc -O2 -c t.c
> strings t.o | grep hhh
hhhhhhh

This was raised with the gcc guys 4-5 weeks ago 
and might now be fixed.  I'm too bandwidth-deprived
to check.
