The attention span of most people is usually limited, so they won't follow very long. Besides that people have a problem with very long numbers. So an end is needed.

But extending that scheme to the stable series might be interesting too, producing stable kernels

That would lead to an interesting looking kernel.org page before switching to 4.0. And I assume it would make many people very happy when the kernel finally switches to 4.0.
