Bret,
Linux, NT, and '95...
You'll probably get as many replies as there are subscribers
to this list, but since you asked for it, I'll throw in my
$0.02 and tell you about my Gateway Solo 2500, that successfully
dual-boots RedHat 5.2 + PCMCIA 3.0.5 and NT4.0.
95/98 should be no problem adding to that.
For XF86 I use the native NeoMagic, but haven't managed to get it
working on an external monitor (comments welcome!).
I had a bit of a struggle getting sound and pcmcia
(Xircom 10/100 combo) ethernet working fine under *both* Linux
and NT, but seem to have it sorted now.
Overall, it's a really nice machine, 300MHz PII, 160MB RAM, 6.4GB HD,
1024x768 display (13.3" TFT), the only downside I've found is the
non-standard Neomagic sound chip. The builtin keyboard doesn't suck,
and it's great to have CD and floppy at the same time.
The battery life is incredible! (Perhaps partially due to the
restrictive APM default settings, but it looks VERY promising).
I had a printout of < http://fatcatlabs.com/laptops/solo2500.html >
handy when installing, just in case...
By the way, I *don't* need to power down before switching between
NT and Linux, but I've heard rumors that some people need to when
switching from 95/98 to Linux.
Well.. perhaps a little too many words for just saying that I'm
a happy man with my Gateway Solo2500 SP6-300.
Basically a stock RH 5.2, the latest PCMCIA package, and the XBF
NeoMagic X server should get you up and running.
