Just a word of thanks to all respondents and an update:
I have discovered ways to tackle this in Dos and Linux.
Linux has the fdutils package (Thanks Ian) which I have loaded, made
after a fashion and read the help file. I am making progress by
corresponding with the author.
Apparently, I have a double sided disk with 80 tracks (Numbered 0-79)
on each side, and I think 5 sectors per track, giving a total of 800
sectors for the disk (not 80...somebody lost a zero in the software).
Sector size I can't determine, as the machine pc freaks when I key in
the magic words. I feel exactly like the socerer's apprentice. I haven't
read it yet, but hope to soon.
It is beginning to look like an 800k disk. I hgope that's what it is.
Dos 6 has the drivparm command for config.sys.
More news soon!
