I too have a Thinkpad 755C, and see the same behaviour (even after flash
upgrading the BIOS to the latest version available).

I think this is just another example of a buggy APM BIOS.  One example is
that it reports an error code when asked to blank/unblank the screen,
despite the operation succeeding.

A theory (which I have no proof for), is that it doesn't resume in
protected mode, so the machine just falls over.  This doesn't affect
MS Windows, as this switches back to real mode before hibernation,
and switches back after.
