Theoretically you could run off a zip [ and a floppy ]. You'd need to use a
computer with a cdrom or network interface to install onto the zip and make a
boot floppy to boot to the zip, then move zip and floppy over to the laptop.
You'd need to make sure everything you'd need for the laptop is either
available in the kernel or via modules on the zip.
Look for pages on installing to Toshiba Libretto. I've seen stuff about a
couple of people using this method.
Also, check some of the mini linux dists. This months Linux Journal has an
article from the guy who started the Linux Router Project. That dist installs
from a floppy, so should work for you, at least to get you going. It still
won't work for libretto because it accesses floppy for filesystem :(.
