I have a Compaq Presario 1625 which works great (it's a K6 rather than a
P2).

The catch is knowing which chipset. Regardless, it'll probably be
supported only under XFree86 3.3.3.1 (which means that anything earlier
than SuSE 6.0 probably won't work with X out of the box).

I use a pcmcia modem. Frankly, I never tried the factory modem as I
presumed it was a winmodem. I use a Linksys 10/100 PCMCIA ethernet adapter
that works great.

I'm very happy with my Compaq actually. :)
