My laptop manual (Toshiba 500cdt) claims that if I set a HDD password,
the drive will be encrypted with no option for recovery.  Beats me how
this is done (must be some BIOS thing) or how strong the encryption
is, but it at least shows that some manufacturers recognize the need.
If they did a good job, physical access would not be enough.
