I think what you're referring to here is the fact that LILO store the
exact location of the kernel in the master boot record, so if you change
or move the kernel at all, you need to re-run LILO to modify the mbr. I
believe the hard drive on the VAIO is not big enough to encounter the
problem I'm having, but the symptoms do look similar.
