Adam,
Great howto. We have several T8000's on which we plan to run
various O/Ss plus RedHat. Your notes are very helpful.
I have a few suggestions/additions:
1) You may boot a bootable CD-ROM such as a RedHat install disc
by holding the C key while powering on the system. Release the C
key when you get the Toshiba splash screen (big red letters). This
may be used to boot/install RH 6.0.
2. Sound defaults to 0x530, I5, D1,3, but IRQ 5 is not supported by
the
stock kernel drivers. The drivers from oss may be used with:
Yamaha OPL3-SXx (YMF715/YMF719) non-PnP
0x530, IRQ 5, DMA (A) 1, DMA (B) 0
OPL3-SA 0x300, IRQ 9 [not yet tested]
FM 0x388
I imagine the kernel could be patched to use IRQ 5....
3. To autostart OSS sound, add a line in /etc/rc.d/rc.local:
/usr/local/bin/soundon
4. RH 6.0 comes with the NeoMagic chip set X driver. Select NeoMagic
when prompted for the driver. Select 1024x768 LCD display. Select
2M
RAM (the laptop has 2.5M). Once RedHat boots the first time, you
may
fix the display to boot in 1024x768 mode by running XF86Setup and
setting the default to 1024x768 8, 16, or 24 bit mode. 24 bit mode
still
seems slow and appears to have problems with some icons.
5. My 3C562 network card appears to work. My 3CCFE575BT (10/100
cardbus) is having problems. CardBus support is beta.
6. PCMCIA is a pain. I am having some trouble with slot 0, but slot 1
seems to work.... I have 2.2.5 and PCMCIA 3.0.9 and 3.0.10 (4/8
version).
The PCMCIA supplied with RedHat sort of worked.
7. The keyboard is very fast and often does result in duplicate
characters. Is this
a repeat option in the BIOS?
8. When in 24-bit mode, the icons on the title bar with Netscape and
WordPerfect
are in black and white, and are messed up. Netscape does display
pictures
fine, in full color. The icons and graphic banner for WP are fine
at 8 and 16
bit resolutions. At 24 bpp, the GNOME icons appear OK, as does the
start bar.
9. RH 6.0 comes with a kernel that understands APM out of the box.
With 5.2, you
had to recomple a kernel. APM is enabled by default and you may
use apm -s
to suspend! Note, the RH 6.0 kernel is 2.2.5, but there is now a
2.2.7....
I will provide updates to you as I progress with my install and
testing....
Cheers,
