Hi, I finally found a solution for my Cyber9397 that makes me happy.
Thanks to Rainer Wiener for suggesting to look into the Device section!

8, 16, 24 bpp are still _not_ working but after endless tries of device
options listed in README.trident I've dicided to try Option "accel".
This option is by default disabled because sometimes there are problems.

Up to now I have not found any problem except that scrolling and moving
windows is now fast! :) Therefore, for now, I'm no longer motivated to
get other bpp working :)

Section "Device"
     Identifier "My Video Card"
     VendorName "Unknown"
     BoardName "Unknown"
     # option accel boost my cyber9397
     Option "accel"
EndSection
