If you're connected to a network, try to ping or telnetting your laptop.
Maybe only the console hangs.

It is a known problem that there are sometimes problems if more than one
driver (i.e. gpm and X) are sharing one PS/2 mouse!

Is you ps2 driver is in kernel or as modul? Try both.

Maybe there is a timing problem?! Try a 'sleep 1' befor starting gpm.

Check
    http://www.suse.de/sdb/en/html/gpm_xdm.html
    http://www.suse.de/sdb/de/html/twomice.html (In german only)
to start only one driver for ps2 (gpm ans X, important).

Try 'sudo' to let a normal user start a script with root-permissions.

P.S. I have _sometimes_ (once a week) a total freeze too (internal ps2...)
I tried an older gpm-version but no success. It seems to be the ps2 driver
in 2.2.* ?!
