My system was locking up whenever I used a virtual text console. Everything would work fine if I used a terminal window in X, but sometimes the system would lock up before even starting X. I tried various fixes suggested here: remove PS/2 support, disable services, boot into single user. None worked. Someone on this list (sorry I forget who) suggested using the framebuffer device. That works. No lockups now. In addition I get a much nicer text console. The X server for the framebuffer device is a bit slower and I can only get support for 8 bit color depth to work, but using the FB device is a nice workaround for me. (Supposedly some of the X servers are compatible with the FB device. The SVGA server that I had been running does not appear to be. I have to run the FB X server.) A couple of other people responded saying they are having a similar problem. I'd suggest you try using the FB. I think there is a problem with the 2.2.X kernels and standard VGA mode for the Neomagic 128ZV+ video chip. I never have this problem when using a 2.0.X kernel. Tony
