Subject: Re: Memory Errors on Quantex I-14xx (Document link not converted)
I just sent the machine back to Quantex, they finally agreed something might
be wrong, so I can't get those exactly for you. But, I looked thru these and
couldn't find anything oviously conflicting. I have tried running a number of
kernels from no-DMA, bare-necessity kernels to anything and everything that
might be remotely useful. They all ran just fine until hitting this memory
error. The only thing that looked quirky was the IDE detection. The boot
messages read something like:
detected ide0 PIIX4 IDE at xxx,xxx on irq 14: Not 100% native mode, will
probe later
detected ide1 PIIX4 IDE at xxx,xxx on irq 15: Not 100% native mode, will
probe later
hda: Toshiba MK-6409MAV
hdc: Toshiba SD-C2102 DVD
ide0 at xxx,xxx on irq 14
ide1 at xxx,xxx on irq 15
hda: Toshiba MK-6409MAV, 63xxMB w/0KB Cache, CHS=863/240/63
hdc: Toshiba SD-C2102 DVD, ATAPI CD-ROM drive w/128KB Cache
I hdparmed both, the hard drive read back "BuffType=0(?), BuffSize=0KB" and
the DVD read "BuffType=0(?), BuffSize=128KB". The hard drive is suppose to have
a 512KB cache and the DVD has a 128KB cache according to the specs on Toshiba's
Disk Products web page. I have not yet seen any corruption on the disk itself
except during installation. Can anyone else verify this cache output? Quantex
techs were clueless on the subject, it seems I know far more about internals of
this machine than anyone there, and could not suggest anyway to check this under
Win98.
My machine configuration is a:
Quantex I-1410 PII-333
64MB RAM
6.4GB Toshiba MK-6409MAV hard drive
Toshiba SD-C2102 DVD-ROM
with an internal winmodem and hardware based DVD decoding.
It has an Intel chipset 82371EB/EA (? A or S ?). On the primary PCI bus there
is a USB controller (disabled in BIOS but appears to be built into chipset), a
LuxSonor DVD decoder (IDed as M-Pact MPEG decoder), TI-1220 CardBus PCMCIA
(appears to work fine with pcmcia-3.0.9 and a LinkSys 56K/10baseT Lanmodem), ide
ports, Maestro-2 sound chip, and probably something I'm forgetting. Off a
bridge to the AGP bus, their is an ATI Rage Pro Lt video card w/8MB RAM (XF86
3.3.5 work great).
This time the Quantex repair facility is suppose to "bare bones" it and swap
the motherboard and memory. Hopefully it will get fixed this time.
Thanks
Adrian
