Yes, I did it ! :-) ... with the same results.
Instead following your instructions everything worked fine!

I set up the PPP connection (transfer rate about 8 KB/s ) and in the evening
now I'm trying with the PLIP.
I modified your ppp config file adding "passive"; this way the pppd daemon
doesn't exit when the timeout expires!
