IBM ThinkPad i1720 - PCMCIA modem stops working after power-down.

I just installed RedHat 6.0 on an IBM ThinkPack i1720.  I've got a 3COM
3C589 Ethernet card and a Megahertz XJACK 14.4 modem card in the PCMCIA
slots.  Both work fine until the laptop powers down after a minute or so
of inactivity (power management).  After that, the modem no longer
responds to AT commands.  The ethernet card has no problems.

Any ideas?
