I recently (yesterday) purchase a IBM ThinkPad 390X (PII-400MHz, 64MB,
15" TFT etc.) as well as a DVD floppy combo drive. Now I have Linux
2.2.12 (RedHad 6.1), X, and sound all working on this computer. I have
not yet opened the box with the DVD drive (the laptop comes with a 24X
CD floppy combo drive). I was reading around and found that there are
basically two different types of DVD drives RPC-1 and RPC-2
RPC-1 means DVD player is REGION FREE.
RPC-2 means DVD player is REGIONALLY CODED
and unfortunately the one I have is RPC-2 which means that if I was to
take my portable computer to say Japan on business that I would not be
able to watch DVDs make in Japan (this seems like a flaw for portable
computer DVD players to be so restricted).

What I am wandering is. For others that have laptops, how important is
this ability of the DVD player to play DVDs from other regions? I
suppose it depends on how often I travel, and if when I do if I have
time to watch a movie etc. What I am wandering is, what have other
people done? I can still return the drive for full refund you see.
There are no DVD drive for the TP 390X that are RPC-1. An external
drive is a possibility, not an nice one though, I bought the TP390
because it had everything built into the laptop and did not need
external devices (other then the power brick).

Looking for peoples experience about this.
Thanks
