Hi Tex,

Are you sure you have the syntax of ifconfig correct here: "ifconfig
eth0 down up"?

I think it will just bring the interface down and then up again... I
am not sure this is what you are setting out to do---this will work,
but it might not be what you are actually trying to do. You need to
associate an IP with the interface here. 

Try assigning a hostname/IP pair for the interface eth0 in your
/etc/hosts file (read the appropriate HOWTOs to find out what this IP
address would be in your situation if you are unsure) and then do
"ifconfig eth0 assigned_hostname up" to bring the card up... If I am
misinterpreting you post please excuse my blunder! :) What does the
output from "route" look like after the ethernet interface is brought
up---using ifconfig as you have been doing and then after assigning an
IP?
