   When I had a Neomagic chipset in my laptop, I needed to specify that
   both the internal and external monitors be used, then use the Fn+f4
   hotkey to turn off the LCD panel.

   I never did get it to toggle between them right unless it booted with
   both active. YMMV.

I had similar problems, where if the laptop booted without the
external monitor attached, it would disable all the Fn-key actions to
activate the external monitor.

There were also some weirdnesses about running X on the LCD vs. the
external monitor.  I could start X for either one, but it wouldn't
work if I used the Fn-key to switch to the other one.
